Surgery of the skin is our area of expertise. With state of the art facilities and world-class service, The Woodlands Skin Surgery Center is at the forefront of quality medical and surgical care. Our Physicians are specialty trained in all aspects of skin surgery as well as laser and reconstructive surgery.
The heart of our practice centers around patients with skin cancer. Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the United States. Over one million Americans will be diagnosed with skin cancer this year alone. Fortunately, the most common form of skin cancer, basal cell carcinoma, is also the most treatable. Other more dangerous forms of skin cancer, such as squamous cell carcinoma and melanoma, are also increasing dramatically in the United States. All forms of skin cancer should be taken seriously and early treatment is nearly always curative.
For most skin cancers, surgery is all that is needed. The surgical treatment that consistently offers the highest rate of cure for most forms of skin cancer is Mohs micrographic surgery. Mohs surgery, named after the founder of the surgical technique, Dr. Frederic Mohs, is a highly specialized surgical treatment designed to completely remove all cancerous tissue while preserving as much healthy skin as possible. This is possible by removing the cancer one layer at a time and examining each layer under the microscope. All edges of the examined skin are checked under the microscope while the patient is in the surgical suite in order to ensure the highest cure rate possible. Following the confirmed removal of the skin cancer using the microscope, Our Physicians and staff will typically repair the wound on the same day. Our Physicians have vast experience in advanced reconstruction techniques.
The benefits of the Mohs surgical technique are:
- Safety – Mohs surgery is performed as an outpatient procedure in our state of the art surgical suite under local anesthesia. This allows for a faster recovery time and a lower risk of complications.
- Convenience – By confirming the removal of the skin cancer and performing the repair all on the same day as the removal, Mohs surgery allows the patient to be treated completely with only one visit to the surgical suite.
- Preservation – With the precise nature of Mohs surgery, the surgical wound is the smallest possible, which often means the smallest scar possible.
- Cure – Mohs surgery provides the highest cure rate of any treatment for both primary and recurrent skin cancers, approaching 99% for many forms of cancer.
